'CO' is No-Go

As temperatures drop, you're probably turning up the thermostat. When heating your home, it's especially important to be aware of carbon monoxide (CO), a highly toxic gas that is both colorless and odorless. Install a carbon monoxide detector in your home, check it regularly, and take time to make sure all fuel-burning appliances, such as furnaces, boilers, hot water heaters, and dryers are properly vented.

Handle Your Candles With Care

Winter weather may be frightful, but a house fire is anything but delightful. According to the NYC Fire Department (FDNY), more than 33% of candle fires occurred when candles were left unattended or abandoned. This holiday season, be sure to practice candle safety. Place candles out of reach of small children and pets, extinguish candles before leaving the room, and never leaving burning candles unattended. In case of an emergency, remember: never use candles to light your home.

We Are New York

New York City is home to many cultures and languages, and when planning for an emergency, all New Yorkers should know the steps and be prepared. The NYC Citizen Corps Council has teamed up with the City University of New York and the NYC Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs to create a "We Are New York" episode that teaches English-language learners about emergency preparedness. What's more, the video will be accompanied by learning materials that viewers can use to help create their emergency plan.

November is Critical Infrastructure Protection and Resilience Month

The President has declared November 1 is the start of Critical Infrastructure Protection and Resilience Month.  All of us rely on critical infrastructure like power, water, transportation and communications systems to sustain the way we live and work, but how many organizations have taken steps to build a robust business continuity plan that takes into account risks to the infrastructure that supports your operations? (Don’t forget – much of the infrastructure that supports you business may be located in other states or communities.)
In partnership with our colleagues at the DHS National Protection and Program Directorate’s Office of Infrastructure Protection, we encourage you to learn more about critical infrastructure and potential impacts throughout your supply chain, as well as steps you can take to mitigate these impacts.  You can also start an online discussion to share your tips, tweets, questions, links to good articles, and comments at #infrastructure.
