Become a Flu Fighter

Being prepared for anything includes fighting off the flu! Believe it or not, flu can happen in the early spring, too. The best way to protect yourself is with the vaccination. Aside from vaccinations there are also small adjustments to your daily habits that can help keep you and those around you healthy: washing your hands often with soap and water, and covering your mouth and nose when you sneeze with a tissue or the inside of your elbow (NOT your hands!). If you do get sick, make sure to stay home from school or work and don't return until you're fever free for at least 24 hours.

Get Prepared by Planning for Hazards

It should be of little surprise that New York City is no stranger to natural and man-made hazards. The best method of safety is to plan ahead! If you find yourself facing an emergency like a fire, hurricane or power outage, turn to your emergency plan. Some additional tips to remember:

• If you own a home, protect your property by taking steps to reduce your risk.
• If you own a business, consider how these emergencies may affect your ability conduct your daily operation. Decide which hazards are most likely to affect your business and plan for those first.

Flood Zones Do Not Equal Hurricane Evacuation Zones

You already know the difference between hurricanes and floods, but it's important not to confuse flood zones and hurricane evacuation zones. Flood zones are used to determine a property's risk of flooding and are used to set flood insurance rates and building regulations. Hurricane evacuation zones, on the other hand, are areas of the city that may be ordered to evacuate if a hurricane or tropical storm occurs. Spread the word and share the difference.

60% of Americans Not Practicing for Disaster: FEMA urges everyone to prepare by participating in National PrepareAthon! Day on April 30

WASHINGTON – A recent Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) survey found that nearly 60 percent of American adults have not practiced what to do in a disaster by participating in a disaster drill or preparedness exercise at work, school, or home in the past year. Further, only 39 percent of respondents have developed an emergency plan and discussed it with their household.
