Lights Out? Remember the Power of Preparedness

Where were you when the lights went out? The Northeast blackout -- which occurred 10 years ago this week -- reminds us that while prolonged power disruptions occur infrequently, it's always a good idea to be prepared. If you experience a power outage, check to see if a fuse is blown or a circuit breaker has been tripped, call your power provider immediately to report the outage, and disconnect or turn off all appliances that will go on automatically when service is restored.

Don't Forget Your Pet!

Pets are part of the family, so be sure to include your four-legged family member(s) in your emergency plan. A few simple steps to ensure your pet's safety can go a long way when disaster strikes. Create a Go Bag for your pet; talk with your local veterinarian, boarding kennel, or grooming facility to see if they can offer safe shelter for your pet during an emergency; and make sure your pet has proper identification.

Save Water with a Spray Cap

It may be tempting to cool yourself off on hot days by opening a fire hydrant, but open hydrants can lower local water pressure, hinder the efforts of firefighters, and endanger the lives of children who may be propelled into traffic by the force of the water. Consider obtaining a spray cap from your local fire station. Install it on any fire hydrant to produce a circular spray of cool water, reducing output to a safe level while still providing relief from the heat.
