Plan To Work Together

OEM TIP OF THE WEEK: PLAN TO WORK TOGETHER
Emergency planning means different things for different people. Anticipating your needs and the needs of your loved ones is the best way to start your emergency plan. March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and OEM encourages New Yorkers to use this week to personalize disaster plans. When it comes to your special needs, you know yourself best. Talk with your family and friends to make sure they understand how to help.

Radiation. Time, Distance, Shielding

OEM TIP OF THE WEEK: TIME, DISTANCE, SHIELDING
While radiation experts agree America isn't at risk from the high radiation levels in Japan, OEM wants this event to serve as a reminder there are steps New Yorkers can take during radiation emergencies. First, always listen to public health officials - they may tell you to evacuate or stay inside. And remember time, distance, and shielding to limit your exposure to radiation. Radiation becomes less radioactive over time. The greater the distance between you and the radiation source, the better. Shield yourself from radiation with heavy, thick materials.

Get Prepared. Get Involved.

OEM TIP OF THE WEEK: GET PREPARED. GET INVOLVED.
In 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared March Red Cross Month. Nearly seven decades later, more than half a million people volunteer for the American Red Cross each year. Keeping with the spirit of volunteerism, OEM encourages New Yorkers to volunteer in their communities. Start by learning about the many ways you can get involved.

Inspect Your Detectors

OEM TIP OF THE WEEK: INSPECT YOUR DETECTORS
On Sunday, March 13, Daylight Saving Time (DST) begins. As New Yorkers change their clocks to prepare for spring, OEM reminds New Yorkers to prepare for emergencies as well. Use DST to check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Take a minute twice a year to prevent emergencies.
