Make Meeting Up Part of Your Plan

It's much easier to stay calm during an emergency if you have a plan. Decide where your household will reunite after a disaster. Identify two places to meet: one right outside your home and another outside your neighborhood, such as a library or community center. Use our new Get Ready NYC: My Meeting Place application on Facebook to identify a meeting place and share it with your family and friends. Gather Supplies for Any Surprise

This week during National Preparedness Month, OEM encourages New Yorkers to gather emergency supplies for their Go Bags and emergency supply kits. Both should have items like water, flashlights, and a first-aid kit, but Go Bags must be easy to carry and emergency supply kits can be larger and kept in a safe place in the home. The American Red Cross in Greater New York is offering a 20% online discount on emergency supplies all month long. OEM Encourages New Yorkers To Prepare For Coastal Storm Hazards

August 31, 2010 - OEM ENCOURAGES NEW YORKERS TO PREPARE FOR COASTAL STORM HAZARDS
OEM continues to work with the National Weather Service to monitor the path of Hurricane Earl. At this time, it appears Hurricane Earl will not directly hit New York City. Still, OEM encourages New Yorkers to prepare for coastal storm hazards like rain and wind.
-Protect your home by bringing inside loose, lightweight objects, such as lawn furniture, garbage cans, garden tools, and toys. Anchor objects that will be unsafe to bring inside, like gas grills or propane tanks. Turn off propane tanks.
-Place valuables in waterproof containers or plastic bags to protect from flooding damage.
-Check on friends, relatives, and neighbors, especially those with disabilities or special needs, and assist them with their preparation.
-Check and restock your emergency supply kit (http://nyc.gov/html/oem/html/get_prepared/supplies.shtml) in case of power outages.

September Is National Preparedness Month

In honor of National Preparedness Month, President Obama urges Americans to prepare a disaster plan, gather emergency supplies, and get involved in community preparedness efforts. OEM and the Citizen Corps Council will host events throughout the city in September to teach New Yorkers about preparing for all types of emergencies. The celebration kicks off on September 2 in all five boroughs. Stop by a kick-off event near you. Is Your Pet a Ready New Yorker?

OEM encourages New Yorkers to make sure their pets are ready for anything. Paying a little attention to de-tail can help ensure your pet's safety when disaster strikes. Start by getting your pet microchipped and preparing a Pet Go Bag. Think about where you and your pet will go and how you will get there during an emergency. Know your pets' hiding places so you can find them easily if you need to evacuate. Whether your pets are furry, feathered, shelled, or scaly, make including them in your emergency plans a pet project.
