Don't Over-Exert Yourself This Winter
Although we haven't seen much snow in New York City this winter, it's important to understand the hazards it can bring. For instance, cold weather can put an added strain on the heart, and a physical activity like shoveling snow could bring on a heart attack or make pre-existing conditions worse. To prevent overexertion, be sure to rest frequently and hydrate, and stop if you begin to feel lightheaded or dizzy. In addition, sweat that soaks through clothing in cold weather can lead to a rapid loss of body heat, so be sure to change wet clothes to stay warm and dry.
This blog and its author are in no (formal) way connected with the New York City Office of Emergency Management. The content has been pasted from the OEM "Tip of the Week" that can be subscribed to via the page http://www.nyc.gov/oemnews.
(This blog was created as an easy way for me to generate an RSS feed with the history of the tips, since I didn't see that anywhere on NYC.gov.)
September 2009 to June 2012, then occasionally: Also included FEMA "Tip of the Week" messages as they came through. I am not connected to FEMA or DHS in any way, either.
