Know More Than One Way Out

Sunday, March 25, marked the 101st anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, which serves as a good reminder that every household should have a home fire escape plan. It is not enough to have a smoke alarm; make sure you know two ways out of each room, and practice your plan with a fire drill.

Don't Let Your Home be Toxic to Your Health

The NYC Poison Control Center receives about 300 calls each day. About 78% of these emergencies occur in the home, and more than half of the calls to poison centers involve children under age five. Every day you can do something to prevent poisoning. Some things you can do to poison-proof your home include:

  • Choose safe products with child-resistant caps.
  • Read the directions carefully each time you use a product.
  • Keep products out of reach of children and store them in original containers.

Know How To Reduce Your Radiation Exposure

Saturday, March 11, marks one year since an earthquake and tsunami devastated Japan. The nuclear accidents that occurred in the tsunami's wake highlight the importance of understanding radiation exposure. While small amounts of radiation are considered safe, know how to reduce your exposure in the event New York City became exposed to unsafe levels. Remember these three steps:
  • Time: Stay inside until the threat has passed.
  • Distance: The greater the distance between you and the radiation source the better.
  • Shielding: Put as much heavy, dense material between you and the radiation source as possible.
