NYC Hurricane Season is Here

While hurricanes don't happen often in New York City, they are most likely to occur between August and October. NOAA experts have predicted an extremely active hurricane season, with up to 23 named storms and 14 hurricanes.
New York City, with its densely populated coastlines and complex infrastructure, is among the most vulnerable cities to hurricane damage in the U.S. Do you have a plan if a hurricane hits? Start by using OEM's Hurricane Zone Finder to find out whether you live in a hurricane evacuation zone.

Cap the Spray Before You Play

Opening fire hydrants is a common way to cool off during New York City's sweltering summers, but hydrants without spray caps waste 1,000 gallons of water per minute and can lower water pressure throughout the system. Firefighters need high water pressure to fight fires.
OEM reminds New Yorkers to ask for the right tools when using hydrants to stay cool. Contact your local firehouse to obtain a spray cap. Call 311 to locate your nearest firehouse.

Heat Can Be Cruel, Escape to a Pool

The summer is off to a hot start, so OEM reminds New Yorkers to take advantage of the many ways to cool off in New York City. One option is to visit a New York City pool. Public pools are officially open and located throughout the five boroughs. Call 311 or visit the Parks Department online to find pools and hours.

Reach for Teachable Moments

Hello again Tip of the Week subscribers. Sorry for the hiatus. We had some trouble with our message delivery server, but it’s all better now. If you want to catch up on any tips you missed these past few weeks, check out our Facebook Page. And now, back to the tips...
School may be out for the summer, but learning never ends. With kids home, OEM encourages parents to include emergency preparedness lessons in everyday activities. Turn a trip to the local pool or library into an opportunity to discuss emergency meeting points. An afternoon at the movies is a great time to explain emergency exits.
Check out OEM's website for emergency guides and games designed specifically for children and make this summer about learning to be ready for anything.
