Don't Play With Fireworks

Amateur use of fireworks can lead to burns, fires, or even death. Fireworks, including sparklers, are illegal in New York City. According to the National Fire Protection Association, approximately 9,200 people are injured annually by fireworks. This July 4, OEM reminds New Yorkers to leave the fireworks to the professionals and to check out one of the fireworks displays going on throughout the city.

Be Lightning Safe

During the past 30 years, lightning has killed more people per year than tornadoes or hurricanes. This week is Lightning Safety Week and OEM reminds you to take steps to keep safe indoors as well as out. Avoid bathing, washing dishes, or running water for any reason during a thunderstorm as lightning can travel through metal pipes and into the home. If you can hear thunder, you are within striking distance; seek shelter immediately.

Be Heat Smart

New York City's concentration of asphalt, concrete, and metal can make the city as much as 10 degrees hotter than surrounding areas. Heat can disorient, impair decision making, and even cause brain damage if body temperature gets too high. Seniors, children under five, people with chronic medical conditions, and English goalkeepers are the most susceptible. Don't drop the ball this summer. Remember to drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks in the shade when playing outdoors in the heat.

BE AWARE OF THE RIP WHEN YOU GO FOR A DIP

Did you know more people die every year from rip currents than shark attacks, tornadoes, or lightning? This week is National Rip Current Awareness Week, and OEM urges beach-going New Yorkers to learn about the dangers of rip currents. Swim parallel to the shoreline if you encounter a rip current. If in doubt, don't go out!

Floods Are Bad, Protect Your Pad

Floods are the most common natural disaster in the United States. Heavy rain, melting snow, water main breaks, and clogged drainage systems can all result in flooding. Unfortunately, flood damage is not covered by most homeowner's insurance policies. Use FloodSmart.gov's One-Step Flood Risk Profile to find out if your home is at risk and how much flood insurance would cost.
