Listen In When the City Speaks Out

Battery-operated radios help residents stay informed during an emergency because radio stations can broadcast even when the power is out. For children of the Internet era, however, zeroing in on the right station may seem like a maddening game of radio roulette.
New York City has an agreement with four local radio stations to share critical information in the event of a large-scale emergency. All other stations monitor and rebroadcast emergency messages from these stations.
For updates from the City during an emergency, tune in to:
  • WFAN- 660 AM
  • WABC- 770 AM
  • WCBS- 880 AM
  • WINS- 1010 AM

Make the City Greener (and More Absorbent)

Celebrate the planet this Thursday, the 40th Earth Day, by planting a tree. Trees not only improve air quality and help slow climate change, they absorb stormwater, which helps to reduce flooding. Get more information about free street trees through the MillionTreesNYC project and help the City expand its urban forest.

Taxes Due? Copy That

OEM TIP OF THE WEEK: TAXES DUE? COPY THAT
As the tax return filing deadline looms (this Thursday, April 15), OEM reminds New Yorkers to make extra copies of their returns. Following a disaster, insurance providers may request up to three years of tax returns to support a claim. Store copies of your tax returns in your Emergency Financial First Aid Kit while finances are still fresh on your mind.

Know What's Good in Your ‘Hood

OEM TIP OF THE WEEK: KNOW WHAT'S GOOD IN YOUR 'HOOD
Every household should designate two emergency meeting spots within the neighborhood: one right outside the home and one a bit farther away, within walking distance of the house. This week, OEM encourages New Yorkers to use NYC City Maps to find suitable meeting points like libraries, recreation centers, parks, and museums.
  1. Visit NYC.gov/citymaps.
  2. Set your search type to "Address" and enter your address.
  3. When the results display, click "Show additional information..."
  4. Under "Find Nearest..." choose your meeting spot from the drop-down list "Choose..."
  5. Finally, talk about your meeting spots with everyone in your home and practice getting there once or twice a year.
