Be Wise on the World Wide Web

This April Fools' week, OEM reminds New Yorkers not to get duped on the Internet. With countless people and organizations creating identities for social media sites, it can be difficult to distinguish official sites from unauthorized ones. When consulting blogs and other modern messaging services, make sure you trust your source.

  • Look for Web sites associated with the source.
  • When in doubt, contact the source directly.

Tune In Even When the Power Is Out

Two weekends ago a Nor'easter knocked down power lines across the city, leaving some residents without power for days. Losing power happens, but it doesn't have to mean losing touch. A battery-operated radio can help you stay informed about major events in the city. OEM recommends New Yorkers store a battery-operated radio, along with other key supplies, in an emergency supply kit inside their homes.

Foil Floods In Your Neighborhoods

This past weekend a Nor'easter dropped almost four inches of rain on the city. The National Weather Service issued flood advisories for all counties and warned New Yorkers that streets, underpasses, drainage areas, and other low lying spots would flood first. If you live in a flood-prone area, clearing off catch basins before a storm can help increase drainage and reduce flooding. Locate the catch basins in your area and make sure they are functioning at capacity before the next big storm.

Get in Check as You Spring Forward

As Americans prepare to turn their clocks forward this weekend for daylight saving time, OEM reminds New Yorkers to use this time to check emergency supplies and batteries. Replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and check that non-perishable items in your emergency supply kit have not expired. And go to bed early so you can still sleep in!

March is Red Cross Month

The recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile remind us about the importance of volunteer groups. If you would like to give your time to a relief organization, it's best to sign up before an emergency, so you are listed in a volunteer database and can receive necessary training. March is American Red Cross Month, and OEM encourages those interested in volunteering to get involved now.
