Think Before You Drink

Pools It’s starting to feel like summer, and OEM reminds New Yorkers to avoid drinking alcohol and caffeinated beverages on hot days. Alcohol and caffeine cause people to use the bathroom more than normal. As temperatures rise, this excess loss of fluids can lead to dehydration. If you feel weak, lightheaded, or notice any cramping in your limbs, you may be suffering from dehydration. Avoid more serious consequences by drinking plenty of fluids, even when you’re not thirsty.

Play While You Prepare

Pools School may be out for the summer, but educational opportunities are everywhere in New York City. This summer OEM, in partnership with the Department of Homeland Security, introduced three interactive web games that teach children to prepare for emergencies. The games provide a fun way for kids to learn basic preparedness steps like making a plan, packing a Go-Bag, and creating an Emergency Supply Kit. Check out the games and the Ready New York for Kids guide, and teach your kids to prepare today.

Keep Your Cool in the Pool

PoolsWarm weather is finally here, and OEM reminds New Yorkers that all 54 of the City's outdoor public pools are now open until Labor Day. Swimming in a pool is a good way to keep your body temperature low on a hot day, especially for people who don't have air conditioning in their homes. Staying cool in summer is especially important for people who are vulnerable to heat-related illnesses like young children, seniors, and people on medication.
